bienenstich

Can you imagine baking a cake made from bee-sting ? neither do I. Even so, there's a very wonderful and yummy cake, called Bienenstich (engl. bee-sting). Originally a German yeast cake that is also known as Bee Sting Cake, which is traditionally filled with vanilla pastry cream and topped with honey-glazed sliced almonds. As for the taste, it has nothing to do with bees. So how did the cake earn the name 'Bienenstich' ?

The question leads to the small city in Germany, called Andernach on the Rhine (name of a river), which is also called Bäckerjungen-Stadt (baker's boys) till this day. The legend of two baker's boys is known by every child there and its stony statues are still to be admired.

Supposedly the Linzer of the subtending Rhine shore have planned a raid on the city of Andernach in 1474. The legend tells about an attack against the citizen of Andernach in all early morning when the citizen still laid in sleep. Only two baker's boys who were already on the way in the daybreak and wanted to nibble honey from the beehives of the night watchman which stood in long rows on the town wall of Andernach, discovered the approaching enemies. Spontaneously the both threw down the beehives to the enemy soldiers. The bees flew violently in armaments and forced them to return.

At the next day, The city of Andernach wanted to celebrate this expulsion of the enemies with a party. Both baker's boys should wish something for the party, a cake of course. And the creation of sugar, almonds, pudding, yeast and flour, got the name "Bee-sting", referring to the victory with the help of the bees .
