Bruschetta

bruschetta-italian-snack

Bruschetta is an italian dish which originates from central and south italy. It consists of grilled bread slices, rubbed with garlic and topped with extra-virgin olive oil, salt and pepper. There are also many other variations, where red pepper, tomato, vegetables, beans etc etc are used as toppings. The most popular variation of Bruschetta involves basil, fresh tomato, garlic and onion or mozzarella. Bruschetta is usually served as a snack or appetizer.

A long time ago, Bruschetta was food for poor people in Italy because of the simple and cheap ingredients. It is also very simple to prepare. Many people don't know that the origin form of Bruschetta only consists of bread, garlic and olive oil. Nowadays people would expect fresh tomato and basil leaves if they order Bruschetta. The only thing that didn't changed at all from the beginning is the preparation of the bread, which is grilled with olive oil at both sides and rubbed with garlic.

In Tuscany, Bruschetta is called fettunta, meaning "oiled slice". Bruschetta is pronounced as brusketta where bruscare meand to roast over coals.

So how do you prepare a Bruschetta ?
Very easy ! All you need are : slices of Tuscan bread. Toast them over the coals or toaster will do also. Then lightly rub the bread slices with a cut clove of garlic and then add some good olive oil over the bread. Season it with salt and pepper. That's all ! Finish ! Enjoy your Bruschetta !

Of course you also could modify the toppings and add fresh diced tomatoes, onions, olives, sweet peppers, italian hams, anything you want.
