schweine haxe at andechs

schweinehaxe andechs

Yeaahh, a whole knuckle of pork with the gigantic bone. That's Bavaria! Last weekend we made a visit at the famous restaurant in the middle of the Kloster (Monastery) in Andechs. The restaurant has a huge terrace with tables and chairs, where you can enjoy the panorama from the city Andechs. Actually it's a rather a fast food restaurant. There are some counters where you can order your food. Schweinshaxe (knuckle of pork), Wammerl (roasted pork) or Leberkäse. There also have some fish and salad. But the speciality is, of course, Schweinshaxe !

I heard from some friends that the Schweinshaxe in this restaurant is very delicious and tender, unlike every other Schweinshaxe. Well let's see...  the price was pretty high. Around 17,50 Euros / kilogramms. That's plenty of money, since Schweinshaxe contains a huge bone, which can not be eaten. I paid about 14-15 Euros for one piece (see the right plate from the picture above). Ok, it was big, but not that big. Maybe I was just exagerating with my imagination of a super huge knuckle. I mean, in Munich you can get Schweinshaxe with potatoes for 7-8 Euros or less. Of course, smaller.

The taste was good and actually better than other Schweinshaxe I ever ate before, as a matter of course with that price. The meat was pretty tender for a Schweinshaxe and also tasteful. Actually we wanted to try the Leberkäse also. But the Leberkäse was sold out. Pity...

One thing that was bothering us (or only me?) was that the bavarian guys from the table beside us were starring at us all the time, I mean really, the whole time. They thought, we were some asian tourists, who wanted to try some bavarian foods, although I must say, we didn't look like typical tourists. Or maybe they never saw asian people in their life before.. hm.. well maybe I should feel sorry instead of disturbed.

So.. to my summary : food was fine, beer was also great, the Schweinshaxe was delicious, but I was expecting more for that price. Or maybe it's just me, who couldn't find the real different in the precious Schweinshaxe.
