Rawon SetanFor those who don't know Rawon.. Rawon is an indonesian soup with kluwak-nut and beef. The kluwak-nut gives the soup its black colour. The black colour would disgust some tourists. On contrary, the taste is sooo good and unique. I also like the name of this place. Setan means ghost. Rawon Setan used to open only at midnight hours, where the ghosts are awake. That's why the name is given. Nowadays, Rawon Setan is opened almost round the clock. Â
Soto Ayam Pak Sadi Soto is also a soup. The characteristic of this soup is the yellow-green colour from the turmeric. There are two types of Soto : Soto Ayam (Chicken) and Soto Daging (Beef). The most famous place to eat Soto Ayam in Surabaya is Pak Sadi (Mr. Sadi), located in Jalan Ambengan. What I really like from Pak Sadi is the crumbled krupuk (prawn chips) as topping for the Soto, and you can take as much of this crumbled krupuk as you want. Hmmmmm...
Iga Penyet Leko The place is called Leko and their speciality is ribs from beef, served with fresh vegetables and lots of chili sauce. Leko is pretty new but it's very successful, so that it's also known by many tourists. You can choose the heat level of the chili sauce / sambal. So for those, who cannot eat hot food, don't worry, they also can make the sauce very mild.
Bebek HTBebek means duck, HT is an abbreviation from Hoo Ting, the husband's name of the founder. Don't ask me, why it's the husbad's name and not the founder's. The speciality is of course : duck ! Located in Karang Empat. Now you can also find a second branch in Jalan Arjuna.
Mie Gang JangkrikLocated in Malang (about 2-3 hours from Surabaya). It is well known for the wonton noodle with chicken innards. Yummy ! They also have a branch in HR Mohammad Surabaya, but some friends told me, that the noodle in Malang tastes better than in Surabaya. Well you should try it for yourself if you want to know!
Dapur DesaLocated in central of Surabaya. Dishes from West Java are their specialities. I love the way they present the meals on the big long table, where you can choose, what you want to order before you sit on your table. Very seductive !
Babi Guling Bu KetutBabi Guling is actually a speciality from Bali. But you can also get it in Surabaya, namely at Bu Ketut, located at Jalan Dharmahusada.
Fiona, Banjar RestaurantLast but not least : Fiona, a restaurant with specialities from Banjarmasin, south Borneo. The restaurant is located at Jalan Kendangsari, south Surabaya. Banjarmasin's kitchen has noticable influence from Holland, such as using mustard in salad and other cooking styles. We ordered Sate Tulang and it was marvelous ! Sate Tulang is made from chicken meat with bones, grilled with very tasteful marinade and seved with special sauce from tomato ketchup. I never find this kind of Sate on another place. Â
